Disruptive wine brand Other World Wines has completed a six-figure funding round to help with its mission to bring under-represented wine making countries back to the table, from a group of angel investors including long-time Laithwaites Group CFO Jimmy Weir.

The investment will be used to launch a new product line and develop the brand, following the success of its flagship wine, Jumi-Juma.

Founded by Gleb Petrenko and Jack Blumsom, the start-up is seeking to fuel the growth of its brand, championing wine making countries outside of the traditional β€˜Old World’ and β€˜New World’ categories, and having previously sold wine from Ukraine, Morocco, Brazil and Moldova.

Their flagship wine, Jumi-Juma, is a low-intervention Chardonnay and Riesling blend from Moldova, and was funded entirely through pre-orders in less than 24 hours after a successful crowdfunding campaign run by the company in October last year. The funds will be used to release three new wines in the next 12 months, primarily selling through independent retail.

The industry isn’t currently set up around brands that resonate with the next generation of wine drinker, and we believe that true disruption needs to come from the outside. We’re talking about some of the oldest wine making countries in the world, with thousands of indigenous grapes and wines that consumers in the UK have never heard of. This investment will allow us to bring those to market, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to tell the story of these winemakers and their historic regions through their beautiful wines.
