Molyon, a Cambridge-based startup, has raised Β£3.6 million in a seed round co-led by IQ Capital and Plural to kickstart manufacturing at its pilot facility. Founded by Dr Ismail Sami, Dr Zhuangnan Li, Professor Manish Chhowalla, and Dr Sai Shivareddy, Molyon is pioneering lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with twice the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Based on 15 years of research at the University of Cambridge, the companyβs patented cathode technology utilises metallic molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) to stabilise sulfur, achieving energy densities of 500 Wh per kg over hundreds of cycles.
The funding will enable team expansion and pilot manufacturing, with initial applications in drones and robots that will benefit from the lighter weight and improved range of Molyonβs batteries. This breakthrough technology aims to redefine battery innovation, tackling range anxiety and advancing the electrified future.
