Modern Synthesis, a London-based sustainable materials startup, has raised £4.5m in a seed extension round led by Extantia Capital, with participation from Artesian and Collaborative Fund. The company develops biomaterials for high-end fashion brands by combining nanocellulose grown from sugar-eating bacteria with natural textiles like hemp and linen to create durable, petrochemical-free alternatives to leather and synthetic fabrics.
The funding will help Modern Synthesis expand production at its pilot facility and support more fashion brands, including Danish label GANNI, which is set to launch its Bou Bag using the company’s biomaterials. The startup’s patented process enhances nanocellulose structures to improve material strength and pliability, offering scalable, low-impact alternatives for the fashion industry.
